John Talbert Gatorade Player Of The Year

CHICAGO(June 19, 2008)—In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, today announced JOHN TALBERT of Kansas City East Christian Academy as its 2007-08 Gatorade Kansas Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Talbert is the first Gatorade Kansas Boys Track & Filed Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Kansas City East Christian Academy.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Talbert as Kansas’ best high school boys track & field athlete. Talbert is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade national Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year award to be announced later this month.

The senior thrower won the discus event at the Elwood Mini-Meet with an effort of 213 feet, 1 inch which ranked as the nation’s No. 2 scholastic performance in 2008 at the time of his selection. A three-time USA Track and Field junior national champion, Talbert also recorded a season-best shot put distance of 57 feet, 7 inches. He won the discus throw at the Kansas Relays with an effort of 200 feet, 6 inches. The KU Relays record was one year old and held by Luke Bryan in 2007. The previous 25 year old KU Relay record was broken by Luke. Luke and John are good friends and have trained together in the off season now for years. Talbert owns the state record in the hammer throw with a distance of 200 feet, 3 inches.

Talbert has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom as a home-schooled student and received a quality score of 26 on the ACT. An accomplished guitarist and songwriter, he volunteers as a counselor on behalf of the Kansas Bible Camp ministry.

“He’s not a huge kid, but he’s got great technique and he practices very hard,” said Kansas City East Christian Academy Boys Track Head Coach Larry Johnson. “I think he set a record at every meet he threw at this year. He’s also an outstanding young gentleman and very humble.”

Talbert has signed a National Letter of Intent for track and field at Liberty University for this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball and boys and girls track & field. The selection process is administered by RISE Magazine, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Talbert joins recent Gatorade Kansas Boys Track & Field Athletes of the Year, Iain Trimble (2006-07, Shawnee Heights HS), Eric Thomas (2005-06, Thomas More Prep), and Jared Huske (2004-05, Highland Park HS) among the state’s list of former award winners.
